Pedicuring With Flesh-Eating Fish

Fish Pedicure

I think I will add a stop to Yvonne Hair & Nails salon to my list of places to visit in Washington DC. I really need to apply a new pedicure technique to my feet. And what more original technique than fish pedicure?

Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far.

"This is a good treatment for everyone who likes to have nice feet," Ho said. Watsh the following video ...

Ho said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.

Ho was skeptical at first about the fish, which are called garra rufa but typically known as doctor fish. They were first used in Turkey and have become popular in some Asian countries.

But Ho doubted they would thrive in the warm water needed for a comfortable footbath. And he didn't know if customers would like the idea.

"I know people were a little intimidated at first," Ho said. "But I just said, 'Let's give it a shot.' " Customers were quickly hooked.

State regulations make no provision for regulating fish pedicures. But the county health department — which does regulate pools — required the salon to switch from a shallow, tiled communal pool that served as many as eight people to individual tanks in which the water is changed for each customer.

Extra Cellular Matrix Dust: To Grow Back A Severed Finger In 4 Weeks

Extra Cellular Matrix Dust

"I put my finger in," Lee Spievak says, pointing towards the propeller of a model airplane, "and that's when I sliced my finger off." It took the end right off, down to the bone, about half an inch. Today, Spievak, who is 69 years old, shows off his finger, and it's all there, tissue, nerves, nail, skin, even his finger print! It wasn't a transplant. Spievak re-grew his finger tip using a powder (Extra Cellular Matrix).

"I think that within ten years that we will have strategies that will re-grow the bones, and promote the growth of functional tissue around those bones ", said Dr Dr Stephen Badylak from the University of Pittsburgh. The process he has been pioneering over the last few years involves scraping the cells from the lining of a pig's bladder. The remaining tissue is then placed into acid, "cleaned" of all cells, and dried out. It can be turned into sheets, or a powder.

When the extra cellular matrix is put on a wound, scientists believe it stimulates cells in the tissue to grow rather than scar. If they can perfect the technique, it might mean one day they could repair not just a severed finger, but severely burnt skin, or even damaged organs.

UAE Economy Minister Launches Her Own Fragrance

Sheikha Lubna Fragrance

Economy Minister Sheikha Lubna Al-Qassemi, the first woman minister in the United Arab Emirates, has launched her own perfume with part of the proceeds going to charity, the Khaleej Times newspaper reported today.

Sheikha Lubna unveiled the fragrance - "Mukhalat Sheikha Lubna" - at the Dubai branch of the luxury Saks Fifth Avenue store.

The event was held recently with several VIP guests present, including Shaikha Lubna and her associates, Saks Clients and members of the media. 20 per cent of sales made on Mukhalat Shaikha Lubna will be donated to the Friends of Cancer Patients, a charitable organisation based in Sharjah.

“Fragrance is known to stir positive emotions in a woman’s heart — the new mukhalat will stir even more emotion as 20 per cent of the sales will be donated to the Friends of Cancer Patients," said Shaikha Lubna.

Shaikha Lubna’s patronage comes as a form of support to young national women entrepreneurs. 'Mukhalat Shaikha Lubna' is the creation of Al Tanhat Company that is specialized in producing and mixing Arabian perfumes.

The perfume unit price is AED 1,000 (US$ 368)

Glide Needle-Free Drug Delivery Injection (Link)

A British based medical company is hailing as a major step forward the development of an injection device that doesn’t require a needle to deliver the drug. Glide Pharma is based in the Oxfordshire town of Didcot, and say the device offers hope not only for those who are afraid of needles, but also for safe mass delivery in disaster zones and pandemics.

There are essentially two parts to the device, which is entirely mechanical and requires no batteries or power. The actuator contains a small spring, much like a ballpoint pen, which triggers the drug cassette, which contains a small amount of a solid form drug. Honed to a fine point, the drug then penetrates the skin directly, doing away with costly and potentially dangerous needles. The device’s inventor, Dr Charles Potter, describes its advantages:

“A large proportion of people are frightened of needles and dislike having typical, normal injections. We deliver the drug in a solid dosage form, without a needle. So we don’t have that threat. We have a very simple-to-use delivery system as well, which means the technology is ideal for use in the home, or for out of hospitals, for a wide range of applications.”

Lightweight and highly portable, it’s designed for use at home or in the office. And the red-bar indicator will confirm that the drug has been administered.
