Starbucks Vending Machine With Heat-On-Demand Technology

Starbucks Vending Machine

Starbucks Coffee announced at its annual shareholders meeting it will roll out hot drink vending machines soon with broad distribution by winter.

The Seattle "Post-Intelligencer" reports the vending machines will sell hot, sealed beverages including Italian roast coffee, Caffe Latte, Caffe Mocha, Caramel Latte and hot cocoa.

Unlike any other coffee vending experiences in the market, the Starbucks vending platform utilizes proprietary heat-on-demand technology, developed by PepsiCo, which will offer customers yet another convenient way to enjoy Starbucks on-the-go.

Heat-On-Demand is also called Supercooled Liquid Technology or Iron Powder Exothermic Technologies. Supercooled liquids are liquid mixtures that can be cooled below their normal freezing point without changing phase or solidifying. Then, at the flick of button, the supercooled liquid is triggered to solidify (crystallize) almost instantaneously releasing large amounts of heat. In other words, HEAT ON DEMAND.

This process can be repeated almost indefinitely if the product is well designed, making it ideal for many applications.

Advantages of Supercooled Liquid Technology:
  • Safe
  • Relatively Inexpensive
  • A variety of triggering temperatures
  • Large amounts of heat release
  • Reusable
  • Easy to incorporate into new and existing products.
Starbucks will start to test the hot vending machines this summer, with more rolling out this fall and "broad distribution" starting next winter.

Starbucks didn't say how wide that distribution would be or where the hot vending machines will be located, but the machines are a joint venture with PepsiCo Incorporated.

The two companies have been selling and distributing bottled Starbucks Frappuccino since 1996.
